BRIEF
COMPANY HISTORY
As the name suggests, Warburton Holgate Limited is a merger
of two separate companies. E.D. Warburton & Co. Ltd. was
formed in 1948 whilst the Holgate, Fishwick & Leather side of
the business can be traced back more than 200 years.
The company now boasts a world-wide reputation for a high
quality service dedicated to the design of paper, board and
converting machinery. In addition, it is one of the leaders in
the supply and refurbishment of rolls, particularly the many
types associated with the paper industry.
Warburton Holgate's products are constantly in demand from
clients both in the United Kingdom and various export markets.
Many long standing business associations have been developed over
the years - a testimony to its philosophy of continuous product
development utilising the very latest technology.
A multi-station CAD system gives the ultimate in design
flexibility and efficiency. Specialist engineers are able to
quickly prepare new machine designs or layout proposals for
retrofit projects on existing machinery, often interfacing with
the customer's own CAD system.
Warburton Holgate has comprehensive manufacturing facilities
including a large assembly bay, two machine shops and a
fabrication bay.
The company feels that in-house manufacturing is essential to
provide the totally committed, customised service that is
important to paper mill engineers. An experienced erection team
is available to ensure shut-down work is completed on time with
the highest possible quality of workmanship.
Warburton Holgate provides a complete service
which extends from a new paper or board machine to a smaller
machine section or component, and to refurbishment or updating of
worn, uneconomical or outdated plant.
The standard product range covers equipment from
headbox to reel. Our rebuild service often incorporates other
paper machine components, depending on customer requirements.
Individual machine sections such as flowboxes,
formers, presses, dryers, reels, etc., are supplied or
refurbished to give increased overall machine efficiency.
Project management is another area in which
Warburton Holgate has a wide experience having been closely
involved in new and rebuild projects over many years.
Warburton Holgate has a considerable capability
in handling phased machinery rebuilds. This gives mills the
opportunity to upgrade machines whilst keeping downtime to a
minimum and spreading capital investment.
In addition to the production of paper and board
making machinery, Warburton Holgate offers a complete service for
the manufacture of rolls for use wherever material is handled in
web form.
An extensive range of machine tools enables the
company to perform the majority of operations 'in-house'. These
include small capstan lathes, larger centre lathes, a planer,
millers and borers. Additionally, a specialist metal spraying /
plating repair service is offered and a heavy duty horizontal
press is installed for roll assembly and other applications.
Rolls can be designed and manufactured up to 10
metres in length to standard designs or to customer
specification. Many construction materials are available
dependant on application, including mild steel, cast iron,
copper, stainless steel, aluminium and various cast metals.
Most forms of roll covering are also available
such as chrome, tungsten carbide, fibreglass or a wide range of
hard and soft rubbers. Surface finishes range from a basic smooth
machined condition to a highly polished state with strict
tolerances on roundness and straightness.
Most Warburton Holgate rolls are dynamically
balanced to BS 5265/ISO 1940-1973 standards on modern electronic
balancers. A print out facility on these machines produces
certified information comparing pre and post balancing states.
Customers find that costs are quickly recovered as balanced rolls
operate more smoothly and quietly and give longer bearing and
machine life. Complementary services cover roll refurbishment or
repair including shell straightening and replacement of journals.
A fully comprehensive roll grinding facility is
also provided. Most types of roll can be accommodated including
large diameter drying cylinders weighing up to 25 tonnes along
with suction and press rolls. The profile can be either parallel
or cambered. Detailed roll grinding certificates are provided
with each contract.
Warburton Holgate's specialised product lines
for paper and board making machines include custom designed rope
feed systems and monocast nylon segmented or full ring
replacement gears which offer reduced noise levels, higher speeds
and extended life. A variety of reel shaft extractors safely and
effortlessly handle heavy mandrels, air shafts or reel shells and
prevent journal or bearing damage.
The company has over 30 years experience in the
design and supply of flowboxes and formers for most grades of
paper and board.
The Warburton Holgate two drum continuous winder
is used extensively on pre-print presses and many other process
lines. It has all the benefits associated with a traditional and
well proven two drum winder but incorporates a patented automatic
splicing facility which allows continuous running. The
development of this machine follows 40 years of experience in the
manufacture of drum reels and rewinders.
Other products include felt and wire stretcher
systems, unwind stands, a range of continuous rewind machinery
and customised equipment to suit specific requirements.

Warburton Holgate operates from large modern
premises situated to the north of Manchester. It is conveniently
served by the M62 and M66 motorways, by rail and airport
networks.
